Why New York Tech Scene
How is this blog different from what’s already out there? I can see how this is a question that a lot of people might have. Whitney Hess put my thoughts into words better than I ever could. She said:
It isn’t just about the events and the businesses and the sponsors and the résumés. It’s about the real people - their ambitions and passions and talents and ingenuity, all from varying disciplines. It should reflect the camaraderie, diversity and interconnectedness that we all feel and love. Ultimately, this is what sets us apart from other tech communities around the world
So how did I get here? Well here is the story: the idea first came up while I was at Podcamp Pittsburgh. There was a breakout session held by Chris Brogan about how to start a group blogging project. What came out of that session was the beginnings of a blog entitled OMGPittsburgh.
OMGPittsburgh is a grassroots group blogging project, born of the enthusiasm to share the hidden gems of the city we love. Built by the Pittsburgh new media community, it is open to all. Our goal and our reward are the same: To share our stories with one another and the world, so you’ll fall in love with Pittsburgh too.
After that session Chris wrote a great post on How to Launch a Goup Blog Project which I hope you all would read. Chris gave 10 steps:
Step 1: Choose a Domain Name - I decided to go with newyorktechscene.com (which I was surprised wasn’t taken, so I snatched it up)
Step 2: Buy the Domain- (this goes without saying)
Step 3: Point the Domain to a Host - Currently the site is being hosted by Atlantic Metro Communications.
Step 4: Decide on the Software - Like the group in Pittsburgh I went with Wordpress because it’s great and it is something that is very powerful, and flexible. Also most people are familiar with it.
Step 5: Decide on the Plugins - We have installed a few already but your suggestions are always welcome.
Step 6: Decide on a Theme - The current theme is Thematic. The theme has a great structure and it is really simple to create child themes to customize the look. If anyone has any suggestions or would be able to help with the design of the site (logo, child theme, etc) please leave a comment or contact us.
Step 7: Build Passport Accounts - I have setup an gmail account for the blog (newyorktechscene@gmail.com) I also have set up a yahoo account (mainly for flickr) I hope to set up a video sharing account account in the future.
Step 8: Build Outposts - Chris listed these 4: Twitter (done), Facebook (in Pittburgh’s case, they’re thinking of building a fan page), MySpace (which I hope we can skip), and Flickr (for group photo projects)
Step 9: Start the REAL Planning - this is where you all come in. The tech community in NYC is rapidly growing, and I know it will only get bigger and better. I wanted to create a place where we all could come together, blog, share experiences and stories, and create a place for this community to thrive that wasn’t based in one place. Our group is all over the map, meetup, facebook, twitter, event sites, we do a lot. So I think that having a place to discus and grow this community we have built should be a fun challenge.
Step 10: Have Fun - I hope this goes without saying!
